Who are we? What do we do? test

GSS built over 700 primary schools in the ‘90s in the remotest parts of the country on land donated by the community. Most of these have three spacious rooms with a veranda, toilets, tube-well and a play ground. The Model schools and most of the training schools have between 5 and 7 classrooms. Each school runs in 2 shifts with a 30:1 learner-teacher ratio in each class. See ‘key Elements’ for details on the model.

Success Stories

10 year old Russell attends Purbamaradighi Ananda Niketon primary school in Mymensingh district. “My son”, said the mother “was working as a day labor along with his father ever since he dropped out of school. He never liked his school and never wanted to go to school. Meanwhile, the long closed Anada Niketon School run by the ‘Shangstha’ (NGO) was repaired and re-opened last year and the community got involved. We all knew this used to be a very good school. So I got Russell enrolled again and now he loves his school and never misses a day”.

Ruma is a speech impaired little girl of about 8. She was admitted into the nearest government primary school but she was unable to continue because of intimidation not only from the children but also some of the teachers. Ruma’s mother Rehana met Jhuma Rani, a teacher of Ananda Niketon School, in a neighbor’s house in Batiaghata Upazila in Khulna district, and explained her daughter’s predicament. Jhuma spoke to the little girl straightaway and herself took Ruma to her school the next morning. She explained Ruma’s difficulties to the other children and they all reassured her that they would take good care of Ruma.

“Ananda niketon is not like any other school” said a mother of two attending the School in Nauli, Jessore district, “here students learn in school and unlike all the other schools, they are not required to attend after-school coaching classes run by their school teachers which the parents can ill afford. In Ananda Niketon Schools every child can read and write”
